Few artists have made an impact on so many others as Masahiro Kawakami. He is known as one of the premiere artists and scholars on the music of Nikolai Kapustin and Nikolai Medtner, performer and educator at festivals both domestic and international, recording artist for NHK-FM radio and television programs in Japan and for almost 20 years, the teacher of Nobuyuki Tsujii, 13th Van Cliburn International Piano Competition winner.
Mr. Kawakami was born in Hokkaido, Japan and studied piano at Tokyo College of Music. After graduating, he continued his studies at the Konservatorium der Stadt Wien, Austria. Mr. Kawakami is a master at communicating through music and has appeared at many festivals world wide as a performer and teacher in master classes appearing regularly at Music fest Perugia, Italy and Dryad Piano Academy in Hamamatsu, Japan.
Being one of the foremost experts on the music of Nikolai Kapustin, Mr. Kawakami has given performances of Kapustin’s 3rd Piano Concerto Op. 48, 5th Piano Concerto Op.72, 6th Piano Concerto and Nikolai Kapustin dedicated two compositions, Op. 137 and Op. 138 to him. He has recorded the Piano Sonata in B-flat minor by Mily Balakirev, Sonata No. 5 and Etudes Op. 42 by Scriabin, 7 Piano Sonatas by Nikolai Medtner and numerous solo piano works and chamber music works by Nikolai Kapustin.
He gives regular recitals at Suntory Hall, Tokyo Opera City hall, Kioi hall as well as numerous performances with piano ensembles, chamber ensembles and symphonic orchestras in Japan. His greatest achievement came in Tokyo in 2016 giving the world premiere of Kapustin’s 3rd Piano Concerto, Op. 48. In 2017, he has set out on a new recording project for the complete piano works of Nikolai Kapustin.
Through publishing houses Zen-On Music and Schott Music, Mr. Kawakami has edited 20 scholarly editions of the piano works by Nikolai Medtner and Nikolai Kapustin. Though he has an active life as performer, Mr. Kawakami devotes considerable time teaching piano at Tokyo College of Music, Japan.
1965年5月生まれ。北海道旭川出身。
1984年、東京音楽大学ピアノ演奏家コースに入学。弘中孝、三浦捷子に師事。
1988年、東京音楽大学ピアノ演奏家コースを首席で卒業。
同年９月 ウィーン・コンセルヴァトリウムに入学。ディアンコ・イリエフ氏に師事。
1990年より、ヨーロッパを中心にソロや室内楽のコンサート活動を開始する。
1992年６月、ウィーン・コンセルヴァトリウムを首席で卒業。ウィーン国立アカデミーのトイフルマイヤー教授のもとでさらに研鑚を積む。
1995年帰国。
1995年より東京文化会館、紀尾井ホール、カザルスホール、東京オペラシティー、サントリーホールなど東京の主要ホールでリサイタルを行うほか、全国各地でピアノデュオ、室内楽、オーケストラとの共演などで活躍。
ロシアの作曲家ニコライ・メトネル、ニコライ・カプースチンの作品普及や演奏においては特に注目を浴びており、2001年よりオール・メトネル・プログラムによるリサイタル、2006年よりオールカプースチン・プログラムによるリサイタルを東京ほか全国各地で行ない高い評価を受けた。特に、カプースチンと直接に親交を持つ数少ないピアニストの一人として知られ、カプースチンの作品普及に関するさまざまな活動は世界から注目されている。これまでにカプースチンのピアノ協奏曲第3番の世界初演（2016年11月）、ピアノ協奏曲第4番、第5番の日本初演（それぞれ2012年6月、2018年11月）、ピアノ協奏曲第6番の世界初演（2013年3月）を果たしている。カプースチンよりピアノ曲作品137と作品138の2曲を献呈されている。
NHK『FMリサイタル』、『名曲リサイタル』、『名曲アルバム』『クラシック音楽館』などテレビ・ラジオ番組への出演多数。
これまでに11枚のソロと室内楽のCDをリリース。『バラキレフ＆スクリャービン』（1999年）、『メトネル：ソナタ＝バラード』（2001年）、『メトネル：嵐のソナタ』（2004年）、『カプースチン：ピアノ作品集①・②』（2005年）、『カプースチン：ピアノ作品集③』（2008年）、『カプースチン室内楽作品集①』（2010年）に続き、2017年よりオクタヴィア・レコードと『カプースチン ピアノ作品全曲録音シリーズ』を開始。2024年現在、第4集まで完成。CDは『レコード芸術』誌上で特選盤に推薦されている。
楽譜の校訂者として、「メトネル 忘れられた調べ 第1集 作品38」、「カプースチン 8つの演奏会用エチュード」、「カプースチン 24のプレリュード」、「カプースチン ピアノ作品集１・２」（以上、全音楽譜出版社）、「カプースチン ピアノアルバム１・２・３」、（以上、プリズム）、「カプースチン 2台ピアノのための『マンテカ』パラフレーズ」（ヤマハミュージックメディア）、 カプースチン生誕80年記念特別版『ソナティナ 作品100』（ショット社）など100点以上の楽譜を校訂出版。
著書に『カプースチン～ピアノ音楽の新たな扉を開く』、『限界を超えるピアノ演奏法』（ヤマハミュージックメディア）などがある。
2009年ヴァン・クライバーンコンクールで優勝したピアニスト辻井伸行を12年間にわたって指導し育てた教師として知られ、NHK『心の遺伝子』に出演。ほかNHK『クローズアップ現代』、BS朝日『世界の辻井伸行 奇跡の扉を開いた10年の軌跡』などのテレビ番組をはじめ多くのメディアに取り上げられた。
2005年より全国で200回を超える公開講座、公開レッスン、ピアノセミナー、講演会、執筆活動を行なうほか、国内外のコンクール審査員、イタリアやオーストリアの音楽祭やマスタークラス講師として招聘されている。現在東京音楽大学准教授。
